The Top 3 Symptoms of Mold Exposure in Ontario

Due to the assortment of weather that Ontario experiences, mold has likely shown up in your life at one time or another.

It’s never pleasant, it’s never healthy, and it’s usually gross. But how much mold exposure is too much, and how could it be affecting you and your family?

A type of fungus, mold grows on foods and in particularly damp areas.

Mold Exposure Symptoms
Symptoms can vary from person to person, but outlined below we’ve listed the top 3 symptoms related to mold exposure:

Eye, Nose and Throat Irritation
Having itchy eyes, a runny nose, or throat irritation when in the presence of mold is common and is not typically long-lasting. This also applies to symptoms of wheezing or coughing. In cases such as this it is best to deal with mold issues before symptoms worsen in correlation with the spread of the fungus.

Allergic Reactions
If you are a person who has environmentally triggered allergies, you are more likely to experience symptoms in mold-infested spaces. For example, those with Asthma or hay fever would feel the affects of mold much more than those without.

There is also a greater risk for reaction to those who already have weakened immune systems. Someone who has gone through cancer treatment, has had an HIV infection, kidney failure or someone who has diabetes can especially be impacted. There is a greater risk of lung infection in these cases.

Toxigenic Reactions
There are around 20 types of toxic mold, and inhalation/ingestion can cause nausea, fever, a weakened immune system, and can even cause cancer. There are many types of mold that are toxigenic, and the longer a person becomes exposed, the larger the risk of becoming ill.

Stachybotrys, or black mold, is a popular example of a mold whose toxins can cause severe symptoms.

If you are concerned with symptoms related to mold exposure it is important to contact your health care professional.

In terms of mold removal, dealing with fungus and/or toxicity can be tricky, so leave it to the professionals.
