Cellulose Removal with Dry Ice Blasting in Cambridge Ontario

Project Date: 2019-02-01

City: Cambridge

This industrial building in Cambridge required dry ice blasting to remove cellulose insulation from the entire ceiling.

What is Cellulose?

Cellulose is a type of plant fiber used for insulation. In this case, the cellulose was applied directly to the ceiling and left open.

This particular type of cellulose was also presumably sprayed on and well sealed. Therefore, when it came time for removal, it became apparent that manual scraping was not an efficient method.

How to Remove Cellulose Insulation?

Because manual scraping was not the best option, our experts attempted to use compressed air, but it was too lengthy of a process. In the end, dry ice blasting was resolved to be the most efficient method for removal.

Why use Dry Ice Blasting for Cellulose Insulation Removal?

Dry ice blasting is an immensely pressurized carbon dioxide that is a top blasting method for numerous surfaces. As you can see from the photos, this method resulted in no damage to the ceiling, and left zero chemical residues.

There are a number of additional benefits when cleaning with dry ice, many of them environmental.

  • No additional greenhouse gases are emitted from the use of dry ice.
  • Dry ice is not a strong chemical cleaning agent, there is also no secondary waste created at the end of a project.
  • Dry ice converts back to its gaseous state, only the media removed from the surface is left to clean up, which saves both time and resources.
  • The lack in chemicals also saves employees potential personal damage due to improper exposure.
